Victoria Sinel, Non-Executive Director at Teens in AI, Senior AI & Analytics Consultant at IBM and Master’s Degree Apprentice, provided evidence on behalf of Teens in AI, drawing on both her experience of growing up in the AI era and her professional experience working in artificial intelligence. Bev Chislett, Head of Marketing at Teens in AI, also represented the organisation, contributing to discussions across both sessions.
The discussions explored a central question: How can young people have a meaningful voice in shaping the future of artificial intelligence?
Putting Young People at the Centre of AI
A key theme was the importance of protecting young people by design, ensuring that online safety, transparency, privacy and wellbeing are considered from the outset when AI systems are developed.
The sessions also explored AI education, digital skills, AI ethics, inclusion and meaningful youth participation in the development of AI. Participants discussed the role of Government, educators and technology organisations in ensuring that young people have both the skills and opportunities to engage with AI and help shape its future.
For Teens in AI, this means going beyond technical skills. Young people need the critical AI literacy, ethical awareness and confidence to understand AI’s opportunities and risks and participate meaningfully in decisions about the technologies that will shape their futures.
Teens in AI thanks Allison Gardner MP, Lord Tim Clement-Jones CBE, Professor Birgitte Andersen and the APPG AI Secretariat for convening these important discussions, as well as fellow speakers and contributors for sharing their expertise and perspectives.
The future of AI will belong to today’s young people. Their voices deserve to be part of shaping it.
