What will the session cover?
As AI becomes increasingly important to national infrastructure and economic competitiveness, the question of who controls the technology behind it is becoming more pressing. The panel will explore what sovereign AI means in practice, from national security and strategic infrastructure to compute, data, talent, investment and governance.
Speakers will consider which AI capabilities the UK needs to own or control, where trusted international partnerships are essential, and how the country can build resilience while remaining open to global collaboration. The discussion will also look at the UK’s industrial strategy for AI, the role of startups, scaleups and investors, and the infrastructure and skills needed to develop and deploy AI safely at scale.
With the UK aiming to significantly increase national compute capacity by 2030 and investing in strategic AI infrastructure, the panel will examine the choices that could shape Britain’s position over the next decade. It will also consider the people behind these capabilities, including how the UK develops, attracts and retains the talent needed to build, operate and govern increasingly advanced AI systems.
