While the Autumn Budget introduces positive steps for workforce development, <strong>without dedicated funding for AI and digital literacy in schools, we risk falling behind<\/strong> countries where AI education is already prioritised. In California, for example, <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"emoji\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/svg\/1f517.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd17\" \/>\u00a0<a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.govtech.com\/education\/k-12\/california-law-requires-schools-to-teach-students-about-ai#:~:text=The%20bill%20also%20mandates%20that,manage%20the%20rapidly%20developing%20technology.\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\"><strong>AI is now compulsory in primary and secondary education<\/strong><\/a>, equipping students with technical skills and an understanding of the ethical implications and responsible use of AI. <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"emoji\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/svg\/1f517.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd17\" \/> <a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.uef.fi\/en\/article\/ai-education-in-finland-enhancing-childrens-understanding-critical-thinking-and-creativity-through\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Finland<\/a> and <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"emoji\" role=\"img\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/svg\/1f517.svg\" alt=\"\ud83d\udd17\" \/>\u00a0<a class=\"app-aware-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.moe.gov.sg\/news\/parliamentary-replies\/20230703-incorporating-artificial-intelligence-into-the-curriculum\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Singapore<\/a> have also incorporated early AI education, preparing their young people for the complexities of an AI-driven future.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember218\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">To ensure the UK remains globally competitive, <strong>AI education must become an integral part of the curriculum from a young age<\/strong>. Teaching AI should include not only core technical skills but also ethics, responsibility, and relevance to industry needs. By aligning skills with industry demands, we can equip young people with practical and ethical knowledge to contribute meaningfully to the evolution of AI in sectors such as healthcare, finance, and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember219\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>AI is inherently interdisciplinary<\/strong>, intersecting with fields as diverse as biology, physics, chemistry, social sciences, and the arts. <strong>We should not confine AI education solely within the ICT or computer science domains<\/strong>; rather, we need to integrate AI principles across subjects, encouraging students to see its applications and implications in multiple fields. This approach will foster <strong>an AI-literate generation<\/strong>\u2014individuals who not only understand how AI functions but also appreciate its broader societal impact and potential in areas like environmental science, urban planning, and creative industries.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember220\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">An AI-literate generation is one that can confidently navigate and innovate within an AI-powered world, bringing diverse perspectives and ethical considerations to the forefront of AI\u2019s applications.
